ECHIDNA SPIRIT COUNTRY - By Grace Brown
My people have a deep spiritual connection to the land and believe that anything with a defined shape has its own spirit, known as Murrup Biik (Spirit Country). A tree or rock has its own spirit, and features along the river, a forest or grass clearing has its own Tikilara (spirit of place).
Echidna (Gawan)- As well as being the subject of myth, the echidna was highly prized as food by Aboriginal people. The short-beaked echidna is very fatty and this made it popular as food source to indigenous people. The Echidna is a spiny-coated toothless burrowing egg-laying mammal of Australia with a tapering snout and long tongue for eating ants.
The Echidna power animal symbolises courage, strength, isolation, good instincts, and overcoming challenging obstacles. They also represents peace, simplicity, creativity, and self-protection.
There are many interesting facts about echidnas but l just love their little faces.
