Kookaburra Dreaming - Gurrng-Gurrng - By Grace Brown
Revered as a sacred and powerful creature, the kookaburra is often associated with creation stories and spiritual beliefs. In some Aboriginal cultures, the kookaburra's laughter-like call is believed to signal the coming of rain, which is vital for the land's fertility and sustenance.
For some First Nations people, the Kookaburra's laugh each morning is a signal to the sky people to light the sun in the sky. The kookaburra laughs loudly each morning to also awaken everyone to view the sunrise. Aboriginal people believe the kookaburra also brings baby news and someone may be pregnant.
The habitats of the Kookaburra, however, are not as strongly protected as the animals. As small carnivores, kookaburras play an integral role in the ecosystem by controlling small animal populations.
The word for kookaburra was guuguubarra. Other Aboriginal names for kookaburra include kuukakaka (doesn't that sound like the call of the kookaburra?) and Gurrng-Gurrng in my language.
