Wombat Dreaming on Wurundjeri Land - by Grace Brown.
This artwork is a highly detailed traditional dot painting by Grace Brown.
Wombats are a significant part of Australian Aboriginal culture with many tribes having their own words for them. The name "wombat" itself is derived from the Dharug language of the indigenous people of Sydney. Wombats are featured in Aboriginal stories, art, and traditional knowledge, and some tribes even have a specific words the wombat. In Graces woiwurrung language of the Kulin Nation the wombat is called Warin.
In the Wurundjeri seasonal cycle, wombats are associated with the Waring season, which runs from April to July. This season is characterized by cool, misty mornings and rainy days, with wombats emerging from their burrows to bask in the sunshine. The Waring season is a time of shorter days and longer nights.
The Wurundjeri people have a deep connection to the land and its natural cycles, and the Wombat Season is a specific time within their calendar. Wombats are a significant part of the Wurundjeri ecosystem, and their behavior during the Waring season is a key indicator of the season's characteristics.
